STATEMENT: Pawar responds to Van Dyke sentencing

CHICAGO (January 18, 2019)--Following is a statement from Ald. Ameya Pawar (47), candidate for city treasurer, in response to the sentencing of Jason Van Dyke in the murder of Laquan McDonald.

“This sentence puts on full display the institutional racism embedded in every institution within our justice system. We have countless Chicagoans locked away for years at a time for non-violent drug offenses--yet the brutal murder of a teenage boy garners this light sentence.

“While it appeared when the jury reached the verdict in this case that we would finally reach some sense of justice, tonight the prospects for real progress feel incredibly far away.

“I stand with the communities hurting tonight in the face of this devastating injustice, and pledge to continue the fight for police accountability and racial justice in our city.”
